What is FTP?

File Transfer Protocol. A method of transfering files from one computer to another. Usually, it is used to copy files from a personal computer to a server, so that they can be accessed by others. FTP can do a number of file manipulation operations such as uploading files to the server, download files from the server, rename or delete files on the server

There are several common software programs that are used to transfer files (depending on which operating system your computer is running): SmartFTP, CuteFTP, WS_FTP, Fetch, etc. FTP is often used to download files from Internet sites.
